In our October Market Insights report, Leapfrog analyzes hospital performance on two key nursing workforce measures: Total Nursing Hours per Patient Day and Registered Nurse (RN) Hours per Patient Day, based on Hospital Survey data submitted through August 31, 2025. The findings show steady, meaningful improvement in hospitals meeting Leapfrog’s nurse staffing standards, signaling progress toward safer, more sustainable staffing levels nationwide. Large teaching and pediatric hospitals had the most significant gains, while critical access and non-teaching hospitals demonstrated slower but notable improvement. However, median nursing and RN hours declined across most cohorts. These results emphasize the need for continued investment in workforce capacity and innovative strategies to ensure every patient benefits from safe, high-quality nursing care.
